Richard D’Souza

Oct 24, 1951 – Aug 26, 2018  It is with a heavy heart that the KCA, Mumbai, bids farewell to Richard D’Souza, who was an active and involved Member of the KCA, serving on the Cultural and Recreation Sub-Committee.  Blessing with an amazing voice, he actively participated in elocution competitions, debates, and took part in play and sports.   A very talented actor, Richard bagged some prestigious prizes, both in School and College.  He took active part in the parish zonals, and also assisted other parishes in directing their plays for the zonal parish competitions. Richard studied at St. Stanislaus, National College, and St. Xavier’s Institute of Mass Communication.  Over the years, Richard worked with advertising agencies, and later on, the client’s side, handling various advertising accounts.   He also worked with the Modern Group as their Vice-President (Corporate Affairs), and was an active member of the Advertising Club of India. Richard was a very happy, vivacious person.  He loved to organise events, and was the life of many a party.  Richard livened up events, and very often, compered most of them adroitly, be it personal functions, or events at the Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana (WCG) or the Kanara Catholic Association (KCA).  Richard was an active member of the Social Committee at the WCG for several years, and also assisted the KCA for their various functions.  A man of few words, he always kept away from getting involved in controversies, but would willingly help anyone with his cheerful smile, organizational ideas, and skills. Richard suddenly fell ill in the month of June 2018, and left for his heavenly abode on August 26, 2018.  The farewell service was attended by countless friends, relatives and acquaintances at St. Andrew’s Church, and spoke of the genuineness and niceness of Richard as a person, friend and team member.  Our hearts go out to his lovely wife, Janet D’Souza and his two loving daughters.  Richard may have gone from this earth, but certainly not from our hearts.  His spirit lives on and will be fondly cherished. Farewell, dear Richard, we know you are in your heavenly abode, looking down and smiling at all of us. “Richly blessed, a gentleman hard to find; Instant help, a true friend to all mankind; Courteous, happy to all he knew; Hard to find one, he’s among the few; Always smiling, cheering with a helping hand; Rare a gem, a good husband, father and friend; Dearly departed, one gone but not forgotten” – Roweena and Eric D’Souza

September 2018: Updates

At the Annual Thanksgiving Mass held in April 2018, the President of the KCA, Mr. Sunil Alva, personally thanked and appreciated the contribution of the Members of the Managing Council, the various Sub-Committees, and the KCA Staff, for the progress the KCA had made over the past 3 years.     Note: In Vol. 3, Issue 2, of the Amchi Khobor, the appreciation was covered for the Members of the Managing Council.  In Vol. 3, Issue 3, of the Amchi Khobor, the appreciation is covered for the various Sub-Committees, and the Staff of KCA, Mumbai.   Legal and Finance Sub-Committee Led by Senior Advocate and Chairperson, Mr. George Dass, Members of the Sub-Committee have played a crucial role in helping the KCA get back on its feet over the past three years.  From the oversight of the Special Audit (which enabled the General Body to pass the Accounts of 7 years at the AGM of 2016), to advice on the ongoing legal dispute over the Noble Chambers Office, the legal and financial brains of the KCA have given off their valuable time, effort and professional expertise to the institution.     Our special thanks to Sub-Committee Members – Mr. Anil Martis,  Senior Banker with Citizen Bank; Mr. Sunil Lobo, Senior Banker with BNP Paribas Bank; Ms. Lidvina Pereira, retired Senior Banker; Mr. Arvind Pinto, Advocate and retired Chief Commissioner of Income Tax; and Mr. Eric D’Sa, Member of the Managing Council, and Authorized Representative of the KCA in the Court Case with Noble Chambers.     Ms. Lidvina Pereira and Mr. Arvind Pinto were also co-opted on to the Managing Council after serving on this important Sub-Committee.     Our special thanks to Mr. John D’Silva for his ongoing efforts in helping to amicably resolve the contentious matter of Noble Chambers.     Cultural and Recreation Sub-Committee     If the KCA’s cultural programs became the ‘talk of the town’ over the past 3 years, it is down to the meticulous planning and splendid organising skills of our Cultural and Recreation Team!     Led by Chairperson, Ms. Clara Menezes (KCA Vice-President) – who tool on the challenge created by the void of the resigning Chairperson in 2016), and ably assisted by the redoubtable Mr. Richard D’Souza – who sadly passed away in August 2018; Mr. Lancy D’Souza – retired Executive from airline industry, speaker, MC and organiser par-excellence; and the unassuming Mr. Albert Machado – Director of a large firm in the private sector, who was instrumental in ensuring the Monti Fest celebrations over the past couple of years were a grand success.   Restarting our cultural programs after a gap of several years in never an easy task – but the response from Members for our quarterly events is testament to the excellent job done by this hard-working team.       Social and Charitable Sub-Committee    Being a charitable institution, our Social and Charitable Sub-Committee plays an important role in the life of the KCA.  Starting from ‘scratch’, quite literally, the Members of the Sub-Committee led by Chairperson, Ms. Anne-Marie Rego, put in place the Medical and Educational Assistance Programs of the KCA, developed the Application Forms, and drew up the Rules and Guidelines, in consultation with the Managing Council.   The team consists of Mr. Adrian Correa, retired Senior Executive from a reputed multi-national company, and Ms. Sunita Pais, Masters in Social Work with experience in the NGO sector – which meets regularly and takes great pains, going through each application, doing background checks and reviewing documentation – making sure that all Rules and Guidelines are adhered to.  Ms. Janet D’Souza also served on the Sub-Committee for a short time.         Editorial Sub-Committee (Amchi Khobor)   Led by our dynamic and energetic Chairperson and Editor, Mr. Frederick Mendonca, and assisted by two distinguished women with Doctorates in their fields of expertise – Dr. Kranti Farias, Historian; and Dr. Jeanette Pinto, Historian, Author and Educationist; the Editorial Team has ensured that for the past two and a half years, our much loved Amchi Khobor issues have become collector’s items – with information and news about the present and past of the KCA.   As a representative of the Managing Council on the Sub-Committee, Mr. Eric D’Sa was the brainchild behind the initiative – a news magazine for the Association revived after several decades!  Special thanks to Ms. Deepika Lobo and Ms. Anne-Marie Rego who have joined the Sub-Committee recently, injecting the much needed ‘younger blood’ in the Committee.          Sports Sub-Committee   Sports has been an integral part of the KCA, since the KCA Sports Club was set up in the 1920’s.  In recent times, sports has been restricted to the badminton in our Ground Floor Hall.  The credit for taking Sports @ KCA to a ‘different level’ goes to our Sports Sub-Committee consisting of Mr. Merwyn D’Souza, retired sea farer, Mr. Christopher Alvares, former State Athletics Champion, and Mr. Neville Mascarenhas, retired Executive and former Vice-President of the KCA.     Under leadership of Chairpersons, Christopher Alvares, and later, Merwyn D’Souza, the scope of sports has expanded to athletics, table tennis, fitness, yoga, and zumba with over 300 Members signing up till date!  The funds generated from sports has increased 6 times over the past three years, and all of it has been deployed to improve facilities, and equipment at the KCA.   The inauguration of the Sports and Fitness Centre in 2017 was the outcome of the hard work put in by this dynamic team.     Housie Sub-Committee       If our weekly Housie is popular at the KCA, it is all thanks to the efforts of the Housie Team, which consists of three Sub-Committee Members, and a dedicated band of KCA Member – Volunteers.     Led by the efficient and no-nonsense Chairperson, Ms. Denita Gomes, and assisted by Ms. Joan Buckenham and Mr. Henri Saldanha, 200 – 250 Members and Guests have enjoyed the well-run Housie at the KCA for the past three years.     Our special thanks to Denita for working with the Managing Council to put in place Rules and Guidelines for the Housie, and ensuring that Housie accounting is thorough, transparent, and audited – avoiding some

Dr. Fabian Fernandes

Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek”.  Mario Andretti  No one exemplified this quote more than Dr. Fabian Fernandes. In keeping with this Issue’s theme of Excellence, the KCA takes you ‘Down the Corridors of Time’ to highlight one of India’s most eminent microbiologists, a scientist of international repute, a Mangalorean and a former President of the KCA, Dr. Fabian Fernandes, M.Sc, Ph.D. Dr. Fernandes was born in Kemman, Kallianpur, on August 29, 1917, the oldest of eight children of Michael and Cecilia Fernandes.  He did his basic schooling in Kemman, and then moved to Bombay to complete his studies at St. Xavier’s College.  After finishing his Master’s in Microbiology, the field he excelled in, he was on the Staff of the College from 1941 to 1959. He received his Ph.D in Microbiology in 1951, and in 1953 was made Head of the Department of Microbiology.  He left St. Xavier’s in 1959 to join the Ciba-Geigy Research Centre.  By now, he had established himself as a scientist of repute, having published over 30 research papers in Indian and international scientific journals.  He traveled abroad extensively to lecture, to attend symposia, study tours and workshops; and was a high ranking Member of several national and international bodies on Microbiology.  He was presented with the highest International Cell Research Organisation Award.  He was a Member of the Bombay University Senate for over 25 years. Despite his busy academic schedule, he still made time for various civic and social services.   He was a Justice of the Peace, and a Special Executive Magistrate for ten years.  He was the Vice-President of the Catholic Gymkhana for over 12 years.  He was Vice-President of the National Advisory Council to the Catholic Bishops Conference of India. He was also President of the KCA for four consecutive years from 1971 – 1975.  As President, he stressed on the need to increase the membership of the KCA, which in those years was a meagre 300.  In his first year as President, he hoped to get more Mangaloreans to join the KCA, and set a target of achieving a total membership of 2000.  With a view to attracting more Members, he initiated the weekly Housie sessions, which proved to be very popular.  He also encouraged the annual dances and picnics, which the Members looked forward to. In 1972, along with the Managing Council, he got the Rules and Regulations of the KCA amended to be more inclusive and non-sectarian, while not diluting the main characteristic of the Association.  The purview of the Balloting Committee was enhanced and strengthened.  During his tenure, the KCA started the Scholarship Fund to assist students who could not pay their fees. In 1975, he proposed holding the AGM after a Thanksgiving Mass, and quipped that because of this, for the very first time in his Presidency, there was a quorum for the AGM!  He lamented that the KCA had not managed to increase its membership substantially, and that due to work-related issues, he was stepping down as President.  This was also because 1976 would be the 75th year of the KCA’s existence, and a robust team needed to be in place to plan the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.  Dr. Stany Patrao was elected as the next President. Mr. G J Saldanha spoke very highly of Dr. Fernandes, and thanked him for his services to the KCA.  Despite his extremely busy schedule, Dr. Fernandes had made the time to attend every single Meeting of the Managing Council.  He often visited the hostel, and helped to resolve several problems.  He was keen that the KCA reach out to more Mangaloreans, and encourage them to meet and bond, and also offer help to youngsters arriving in Bombay for work by providing accommodations at the hostel at reasonable rates. Dr. Fernandes was married to Grace D’Souza, and was the father of Margaret, Maria, Peter, John, Teresa, and Veera; 4 of whom are Doctors.  He was a loving grandfather to 14 grandchildren, 3 of whom are Doctors, 3 in Medical School, and perhaps, more will follow suit!  Dr. Fernandes excelled not only in science, but also in the culinary arts.  He was renowned for his culinary skills in traditional Mangalorean dishes, and all his children remember his prowess in the kitchen, and delicious curries! Dr. Fernandes spent his final years in the United States with his children, and passed away peacefully on July 15, 2007, and is buried in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Viren Rasquinha

Sportsman, Former Captain of the Indian Hockey Team Profile by Dr. Jeanette Pinto  Viren Wilfred Rasquinha is the hot new age Indian Sportsman.  Surely, you would have heard of him, he is a Star of India’s National Field Hockey Team.  Born on September 13, 1980, to his parents Eric and Merlyn Rasquinha, he grew up in an atmosphere of joy, love, and discipline.  His parents had a huge role to play in inculcating some good habits.  They taught him the importance of physical fitness and studies, planning, eating healthy home cooked food, waking up early, etc,.  Surely, they believed “a healthy mind in a healthy body”. Viren completed his school education in the prestigious Jesuit Institution of St. Stanislaus in Bandra. After trying out a few other sports, he was convinced he had the magic of wielding the hockey stick.  He was on the school team, and winning soon became a habit.  He was lucky to have trained under some of the finest coaches like Olympian Marcellus Gomes, and Clarence Lobo of Tata Sports Club and former Indian Coach.  The bond and relationship any player builds with his coaches is really very important.  Hard work, discipline, and team spirit are what he picked up from his coaches. Viren wears a colourful feathered cap.  He is a rank holder in his 10th Boards; was part of the Gold Winning Indian Juniors; and a former Captain of the Indian Hockey Team.  He donned the Indian Jersey for 180 international matches, a credit indeed.  He was a first class student right through his college, an Alumnus of the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, a CEO at Olympic Gold Quest, and of course, an Arjuna Awardee.  One wonders how he could achieve so much in such a short span of time. Viren was part of the Indian Team that won the Hockey Junior World Cup in 2001 in Hobart, Australia.  He made his international senior debut as a midfielder in May 2002, at a Four Nation Tournament in Adelaide.  He was also Captain of Premier Hockey League Team ‘Maratha Warriors’.  Viren enjoyed the highs of success, bounced back from injuries, suffered the whims of the Indian Hockey Federation, and moved on.  He announced his retirement from hockey on January 15, 2008, to pursue Management Studies at ISB, Hyderabad. He said, “Retirement is a very personal thing.  For me, it was difficult, but I always wanted to retire at the peak of my game.  People ask me till today, why I retired early and remember me fondly, with respect.  That is all I can ask for”. What are Viren’s thoughts of the future of hockey?  He feels that the domestic level hockey standards are poor.  There is an urgent need to upgrade the quality of coaches, who can teach the correct techniques.  Infrastructure, fitness, and diet are areas that need improvement.  A lot of thought and action needs to be taken by the Hockey Federation.  There has been progress over the last few years, but it needs to speed up. His major international accolades include a Silver Medal at the Busan Asian Games 2002, Gold Medal Asia Cup 2003 at Kuala Lumpur, and Gold Medal at the 1st Afro Asian Games 2003.  He was conferred the 2005 Arjuna Award, for Hockey by the Government of India, and the Shiv Chatrapati Award in 2004 by the Government of Maharashtra. Currently, Viren is the CEO of Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ), a not for profit Foundation, started by sports legend Geet Sethi,  Prakash Padukone and Viswanathan Anand, with a mission to help Indian athletes win Olympic Gold Medals.  In the last two Olympics at London 2012 and Rio 2016; 5 of the 8 medal winners for India were athletes supported by OGQ viz. Gagan Narang, Vijay Kumar, Saina Nehwal, M C Marykom, and P V Sindhu.  In fact, OGQ started supporting Sindhu when she was only 14 years old. Amchi Khobor is happy to feature the first of our Mangalorean Sportsmen.  It shows that we are an all-round people, proud to share our joy in the achievements of our entire ilk.  Indeed, Viren is an inspiration especially to our youth; he has proved how one can combine academics and outdoor activities  as well  as be a successful person in life.  He has done the Mangalorean community proud.   Cheers to Viren!

Monti Fest 2018

In keeping with the tradition of the last 2 years, KCA Mumbai’s celebration of the Monti Fest will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2018. We once again invite you to attend the celebration of our cultural roots & traditions  This year, the elections for the KCA office bearers will also be held, so we hope to see you attend the AGM and the Monti Fest celebration in large numbers. Based on the feedback from some members, and since the elections are being held, we will not have a Monti Fest Mass at the KCA this year – as it was felt that the program would be too rushed. A prayer service, followed by the blessing of the harvest and a procession to the KCA grotto will be held. The traditional celebration & lunch will be on the same lines as the last 2 years. Members are encouraged to attend Mass at Mount Mary’s church, before the program. Thereafter, we will assemble at the KCA for the MONTHI SAIBINISHI FEST and KCA AGM. Eligible members can cast their vote from 10.00 am – 12.30 pm. Having a socially and culturally active Association, as well as having more members take an active interest in the affairs of the institution – both objectives are met by having the AGM and Monti Fest celebration on the same day.
